Gandalf, keeper of the secret flame of Arnor, was believed to have died when he battled the Balrog, in the mines of Moria, was a wizard. In the beginning he was a grey wizard, but leter on came back as a white wizard. When he came back Gimli commented "This new Gandalf is more grumpy than the old one." Gandalf removed the control of Saruman from Theoden and helped defeat the Nazgul. He was called the Mithrandir by the guards of Gondor.
